BIGEN EZ COLOR FOR MEN

Summary:

Hair Color Dye for women and men being marketed as a beard dye, too. Some Asians and African-Americans are very enthusiastic about the darkest black dye, Jet Black, and rate it as safer and gentler than Just for Men. Others find it too dark and fake looking. There can be mild to severe adverse reactions–rash, blisters et al.

Beard Dye Review comments:

An allergy test is a must before using, per the manufacturer. You have to mix a tube of colorant and a tube of developer. Rubber gloves are provided. You comb in the mixture, minimizing muss and fuss. You then let the mixture sit in your hair for 10 minutes. This is followed by rinsing, then shampooing.

There’s an article on the Internet about a young male adult who was hospitalized with severe adverse reactions. But keep in mind that this can happen with all dyes and that testing before use is a must.

BLACK BEARD FOR MEN

Summary:

This is a patented product. It isn’t mascara, though four out of five Black Beard customers we asked online said they thought it was. So, in this case, it looks, swims and quacks like a duck, but it isn’t a duck. Apply the product every day. It’s easy to put on, taking maybe a minute for an average beard, mustache and sideburns–and it driesquickly.

The product’s ingredients have been used for decades in the cosmetic industry. As with virtually all beard-color products, Black Beard for Men has its share of glowing tributes–“Works great, looks great.” And there are negative comments, too: “Makes you look like you’re wearing clown make-up” and “wiped off on my clothing.”

Cost is relatively high because each unit doesn’t give you a lot of applications. Still, a few hundred dollars a year, at most, isn’t prohibitive if you get the look you want.

GRIZZLY MOUNTAIN BEARD DYE

Summary:

The Grizzly Mountain folks offer two kinds of beard coloring: 1. Natural Beard Dye for Men by Grizzly Mountain Beard–a “permanent” organic beard dye that is extremely unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. The look is natural, with and lets some gray show. 2. Grizzly Mountain Beard Dye Natural Henna Powder. This product produces a uniform beard color. An allergy test is recommended.

Beard Dye Review comments:

This is the only product reviewed here that promotes its use for a stubble beard. Precise directions are provided for this use.

The original product doesn’t cover all gray, but gives you a natural look “leaving a bit of gray and slightly varying colors and shades.”

Grizzly Mountain Beard Dye now sells on amazon, but there were no reviews as of 3/21/15, so we cannot offer you a range of positive and negative (if any) comments.

HARVEST MOON BY HENNA HUT

Summary:

Copy below is for Natural Brown. Other colors offered include: Mahogany, Indigo and Light Brown. There is an application video that does a good job of showing how this henna product is used. The general consensus seems to be that Harvest Moon is a decent alternative to Just for Men, but that the colors aren’t as good. The product, when mixed, provides a very smooth paste and can have a long shelf life.

The ratings for Harvest Moon are good overall–with the usual range (you can’t please everyone) from “awesome” to “it stinks” (the odor) to “turned beard green.”

The product takes fairly long to apply–45 minutes to an hour according to some users–than Just for Men. On the other hand, the color tends to last for a long time. Grizzly Moun

HENNA BEARD DYE FROM HENNA COLOR LABS

Summary:

Henna Color Labs is for people who like a company that enthusiastically emphasizes a healthy individual, a viable planet, cruelty free practices and natural, organically grown ingredients. The company’s coloring ingredients and herbs are from “the only native place that they grow sustainably and abundantly: Northwestern India.”

The beard dye products from Henna Color Labs can be used on beards, mustaches, hair, sideburns and eyebrows and come in a wide range of colors.

Henna Color Labs suggests a quick and simple spot test for allergies. Apply mixed paste to skin, wait 10 minutes, observe.

This is an usually compassionate company. They care about living wages for their workers and for the farmers who sell henna to them. They also strive to keep everything locally driven and operated. All employees live within 10 miles.

JUST FOR MEN BRUSH-IN COLOR GEL FOR MUSTACHE & BEARD

Summary:

The average customer review for America’s #1 best-selling beard dye review on amazon is pretty good. Out of five stars the average Just for Men Color Gel for Mustache & Beard color falls just short of four stars. Given the allergic reactions to JFM, that’s not bad. Just for Men colors seem to be more liked than the colors of most other beard products. It’s the allergies, rashes and itching that turn off a minority of users.

Beard Dye Review comments:

In December 2014, a law firm ran an ad online looking for people who had suffered adverse effects from using this product. It should be noted, however, that Just for Men gives prominent and clear directions about testing before using. They make it clear that testing must be done before every application, because rashes don’t always show up the first time.

If you’re a younger man who would look better with no gray showing, Just for Men is a good bet, unless you fear harsh chemicals on your face or suffer allergic reactions.

MANLY GUY HAIR, EYEBROW, BEARD &
MUSTACHE COLOR

Summary:

Manly Guy, for use on hair and beard, consists of henna and herbs only. Henna King, a family-owned business for more than 15 years, manufactures and sells the product. It is formulated specifically for men, although the company does sell hair dyes, tattoo paste and other products for women.

• No burning, itching or rash. Nature’s Way to Cover Gray®.
• Safe, cruelty free and made with organic ingredients.

Beard Dye Review comments:

No beard product gets all rave ratings on amazon. But we do note that 28 reviewers on amazon say, in effect, that this product doesn’t work. On the other hand, many reviewers had good things to say. Out of five stars, Manly Guy averages about three stars (as of January 2015).

The manufacturer notes that some (but not most) men get a temporary greenish tint that usually goes away in 12-24 hours.

REFECTOCIL CREAM HAIR DYE

Summary:

Seems that everyone wants to get in on the fast-growing beard and mustache market. RefectoCil is a 70-year-old Austrian company with an excellent reputation among salons and consumers for tinting eyelashes and eyebrows. The company has a wide range of products, spanning lash tints, eyelash-fixing glue and a product that makes eyelashes longer.

• Ideally suited for the tinting of beards and sideburns and pubic hair.
• The color lasts for up to 6 weeks.
• Within 10 minutes (development period) RefctoCil produces permanent coverage and even coloration which lasts several weeks.
• The vivid coloration is light and water resistant.

Beard Dye Review comments:

If you’re allergic to Just for Men, take caution with RefectoCil. The formulas aren’t the same, but some people do get bad reactions.

Although RefectoCil products can be found in amazon’s beard-dye listings, it would seem that the vast majority of users are women who want to tint their lashes and brows.

If you don’t buy a liquid peroxide to use with RefectoCil, the product won’t work. A number of consumers complained about the lack of clarity, i.e., the manufacturer’s lack of clarity in stating that the peroxide is needed.

THE YOUNGER LOOKING BEARD

Summary:

A promising newcomer and new kind of beard-coloring, with two of its colors already on the first page of Amazon beard-dye product listings (January 2015).

Not a dye or henna or mascara, The Younger Looking Beard (TYLB®) is different. It’s a brush-on pigment that you apply every morning. Average application time: about 80 seconds. Theoretically, and seemingly in reality, this product lets you have your best look every day, with some gray showing or not–your choice.

Beard Dye Review comments:

Beard-coloring companies tend to pit themselves against Just for Men by saying, in effect, if you get a rash, then try us. The Younger Looking Beard owners think their safe product is best for a richly colored, natural look that enables you to show some gray or not.
